چکیده

The sulfur nutrition of microorganisms has been studied by many investigators. Early workers were interested essentially in sulfur compounds used by organisms as sulfur sources. Recent efforts have been directed toward the determination of mechanisms involved in the utilization of sulfur compounds. Results of investigations by Horowitz (1947), Lampen et al. (1947), Teas et al. (1948), Binkley and Hudgins (1953), and Wijesundera and Woods (1953) have led to the following proposed mechanism. Sulfate sulfur is reduced to sulfide, which is converted to organic sulfur, probably in the form of cysteine. At this stage the cysteine can condense with a 4-carbon compound, homoserine, to form the asymmetric thio ether, cystathionine. The cleavage of this compound forms homocysteine, which can then be methylated to form methionine. In this investigation, conditions for the growth of Lactobacilus arabinosus were studied when various sulfur compounds were supplied as sulfur sources. Further, efforts were made to demonstrate the mechanism of sulfur utilization.

Cystine Axi) Related Compoupu’ds in the Nutrition of Lactic Acid Bacteria*

The metabolism of certain inorganic forms of sulfur by various autotropic bacteria has been studied extensively in the past. However, investigations dealing with the metabolism of sulfur compounds by the heterotropic bacteria have not been numerous. Such work as has been done (reviewed by Meyers and Porter (1)) indicates that these microbial systems may be quite specific in their requirements f...

Amino Acid Nutrition of Lactobacillus Arabinosus

The growth factors required by Lactobacillus arabinosus 17-5 have been studied extensively by Snell and Wright (I), Isbell (2), and Lewis (3). Investigation of the nitrogen requirement has been limited. Hydrolyzed casein has been found to supply the essential nitrogen when supplemented with tryptophane and cystine. Glutamic acid has been found essential (4), and quantitative levels have been de...

Isoglutamine and the growth of Lactobacillus arabinosus.

The esential role of -glutamine in microbial nutrition and metabolism has been well established (Waelsch, 1952). Recently Ayengar et al. (1951) have described in detail the stimulating effect of the amide on the utilization of i-glutamic acid by Lactobacillus arabinosus. However, almost no published data exist which deal with the influence of iisoglutamine on bacterial growth. We wish to descri...

THE ROLE OF VITAMIN B,j IN THE SYNTHESIS OF TRYP- TOPHANE FROM INDOLE AND ANTHRANILIC ACID BY LACTOBACILLUS ARABINOSUS”

Lactobacillus arabinosus has the ability to synthesize several amino acids when adequate quantities of vitamin Bg are included in the medium (1, 2) ; however, the requirement of this organism for tryptophane is apparently not affected by the addition of vitamin 136 (2). Earlier studies showed that indole and anthranilic acid have appreciable tryptophane activity for L. arabinosus (3-7) but not ...

Determination of niacin in orange juice with lyophilized Lactobacillus arabinosus ATCC 8014.

The determination of niacin in orange juice with lyophilized Lactobacillus arabinosus ATCC 8014 has the advantage over the usual method in eliminating the delay caused by the necessity of cultivating cells of L. arabinosus for the inoculum and also in eliminating the periodical cultivation on agar slopes.
